Hope keeps us going

Today she was meeting her friend Niki for coffee. Niki had left her high -paying corporate job after 18 years of being in the grind. “What? How? Why” she had exclaimed when Niki gave her the news on the phone. “It has to be something special because Niki is a go -getter. She has worked so hard to reach where she is today”, her mind was struggling to accept the news.

Nevertheless, she was intrigued and couldn’t control her excitement. We get enamored by things others do which we ourselves do not have the courage to follow. Similar was the case with her. “I am going to ask her everything today”. She left home with this resolve.

Niki was already sitting at the corner table. She seemed lost in her thoughts. After exchanging pleasantries and some social gossip, they got down to discussing some serious stuff. “So, tell me Niki, why did you resign? Any issues at home? Is the baby giving you trouble? What’s wrong?” She had expected Niki to be super happy but her demeanor spoke another language. She was perplexed as well getting a little worried for her friend.

“I always wanted to write- stories you know. I fell in love with stories at a very young age. My parents used to bring me the most amazing books and I spent all my vacations deeply drowned in them.” She was talking as if she could imagine the summer afternoon when she sat reading her favorite author, Charles Dickens. She sighed and then continued, “I never got the time to pursue writing. I did an MBA to make my parents proud, landed a top job and then immersed myself in acing the corporate game. Many years passed and then I met Sunny. He was perfect; we got married. And then Riya came along. The thought of her baby brought a weak smile on her face.

“Riya is almost two now, she continued, life seemed settled though it’s taken a while. I’m almost 40 now.” Her eyes had a glint of sadness. The journey seemed a long one.”So, one day I told Sunny that I wanted to quit my job and pursue writing because I think I will be good at it.Sunny agreed and I quit, it was almost too easy.” she paused for a breath.

“It’s amazing how a little tomorrow can make up for a whole lot of yesterday.”
― John Guare

“Great babe! How’s it going then?” she asked, with the genuine enthusiasm of a caring friend. She did not expect the answer that followed.”Pathetic. It seems I am struggling to write even one story. Even when I do come up with something, I am not sure where and how to publish it so that people can read it. I never thought about all this. Technology has changed the entire reading and writing system. There has been a paradigm shift in the world of books and readers.I am just feeling so lost. I feel like like I am drowning in a sea of obscurity. I can’t find any work and this freelance thing doesn’t seem to be a right fit for me. I have put myself into a very difficult situation.”

“They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.”
― Tom Bodett

She was taken aback. She knew Niki to be an extremely confident woman who knew what she was doing. This was new for her. Niki never doubted her decisions before. She decided to remind Niki of who she was – a person who got what she set her mind on.

Success! You're on the list.
Doors will open, just keep at it!

“Hey Niki, remember when Riya was born and you had no idea what the hell was going on ? Remember, how you felt your world had gone upside down and you would never get a hang of life again?”she asked earnestly. “Yes, but that is all in the past. I am happily settled with my baby”.

“Exactly Niki, you are that person who fights to achieve her set goal. You saw yourself through a very complicated delivery and came out with flying colors. Why can’t you think of writing as your next passion project- something you yourself love to pursue.” Niki was listening intently as if slowly coming out of a trance.

“All you need is a fresh dash of hope and you will be fine”, she concluded.

“Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.”
― Emily Dickinson

“You are right. A little bit of hope is all I need. Hope in my ability. myself and in a better tomorrow. And then everything will fall into its place,” Niki finally smiled, her eyes shining- with a glint of hope.
